Big old roof rafters

The biggest roof rafter (if that is what they are called) was put in today.  This roof rafter or beam or big old piece of lumber was placed in position across the top of the wall of windows in the living room.

This is the support beam for the roof trusses which run over the living room.  In the photograph, it is the beam that is running from the left edge of the photo to the steel bucket which is hanging from the top most steel cross beam.  One of the roof trusses has been set against it and runs the remainder of the width of the photograph.  The visible floor is the master bedroom and deck.

To give a perspective on this roof rafter, here is a shot taken looking down the length of the beam.  For reference, the red steel piece will be the top of the wall of windows in the living room and, of course, not to neglect the stairs, the round piece at the far end of the beam is part of the stairway wall.

Connected to the rafter shown above, we have more support beams which run perpendicular to that rafter like the ones shown here (just in front of the frame for the staircase wall).  The rotunda that surrounds and creates the space for the amazing sweeping staircase actually sticks out above the rest of the roof of the house.  This view looks across the house from the master bedroom to the study.

Just a few new beams today but they are hefty ones!!
