The roofing material has arrived....

The roofing material has arrived on site.  The roof will be a standing seam metal roof so I expected the roof to arrive in strips with standing seams on either side.  Well, that is not what has happened.  Instead, the roofing material has arrived in the form of a roll of flat sheet metal about 16 inches wide.  The flat sheet metal will be formed on site with the help of an extruder that they haul along behind their truck.

I forgot to get a photograph of the metal roll or of the extruder prior to production of the roof strips, but here is the extruder in action, as one of the pieces is extruded...

If you look closely at this next photograph, you can just make out the cutting tool that comes down just inside the end of the extruder to cut the strip off at the correct length.

The guy standing to the left of the extruded piece is Scott.  He is the one in charge of the roof and he is from SC Sheet Metal.  He will, I am sure, suffer many questions about the roof from Peter and I before he is done!

Once the pieces are extruded and cut to length, they are placed in piles according to position on the roof.  Here are two piles that will end up on the section of roof above the living room

From a different angle, the reflected sunlight gives a maroon rainbow effect!  I thought it was pretty....

On the roof, the guys are busy installing the metal sheets over the roof valleys

And here comes our first question.....The SharkSkin was applied such that the higher pieces overlapped the lower pieces so the water never has a seam to pool in.  Now, the roofers have placed sheet metal over the SharkSkin and created a seam between the metal and SharkSkin where the water can sit.  Apparently, this is okay as long as there is another piece of SharkSkin placed over this seam, as shown below.

It is kind of hard to see, but there is a 4-5 inch wide strip of SharkSkin stuck over the seam between the metal and the first layer of SharkSkin.  So now, the metal seam is gone, but now we have a seam between the two layers of SharkSkin which could allow water to penetrate beneath the upper layer of SharkSkin.  I guess if water goes under the 4-5 inch strip, it will be blocked by the other SharkSkin from leaking into the house.

I know we are being nitpicky here, but we are leak-paranoid.  This was only our first question of Scott.  we have anked many others.  Scott has been very patient with all our questions and is very knowledgeable so I am sure he knows what he is doing!

The roofers have also installed the sheet metal edging along the base of the walls that meet the roof as shown below.

We are supposed to have good weather (no rain) for the rest of the week so the roofers should have no trouble getting the roof done before the next set of rain!
